MYTH BLAST

Persephone’s Garden

One of the most beautiful myths of Greek mythology is that of Persephone. The story of the daughter of the goddess Demeter and the almighty Zeus represents the eternal cycle of life. The legend says that she gathered narcissus along with the Ocean nymphs, when suddenly the earth opened in two and from the turmoil of the Underworld appeared before her Pluto, the god of the Dead. His love for her was so thunderous that he did not hesitate for a moment. He took her in his chariot, and they were lost in the darkness of oblivion, in the kingdom of the Underworld.

Alas! The abduction of the beautiful Persephone shocked the world. The flowers and the trees did not bloom anymore, the crops did not bear fruit, the Creation withered, the laughter and the joy disappeared from peoples' faces.

The Sun was the one who warned Persephone's mother, the goddess Demeter, about the abduction of her daughter. And she, as the Mother of the Earth and People, decided to make the long journey to the Underworld and seek her back. She threatened Pluto that if he did not allow Persephone to return to the Upper World, she would not let the earth bloom again. Pluto refused...

Meanwhile, the frost in the Upper World had brought great misery to the people. Famine, disease and immense sorrow were testing the world. It was the time for the omnipotent ruler of gods and men, Zeus, to intervene and ask Pluto to return Persephone from the world of the dead.

But Pluto, even now, did not want to lose his love. That is why both sides reached a compromise. From now on Persephone would spend 6 months in the Underworld and the remaining 6 in the Upper World.
This is how the Ages were created. In Spring and Summer Persephone returns to Earth and Demeter allows the flowers to bloom, the fresh grass to grow and the trees to bear fruit. People will sow seeds in the earth and their crops will bear fruit. The sun will shine and smiles and laughter will return to people's faces.

In Autumn and Winter Persephone will return to the Underworld. This is the deal. And then the sun will lose its power, the days will shrink, the trees will lose their leaves, the fields will be covered by water, snow and ice. But that will not last forever. Next Spring Persephone will ascend again to the Upper World and everything will flourish, obeying the endless cycle of life and creation.
